Re: Cannot find the file "C:...dfrg.msc' ...

Thank you for your response! Sorry for delay in answering back; I
started a new job and it's been so hectic have not been on my computer
much so getting caught up now.

I don't know what has happened in the interim, but I did have the
dfrg.msc file. This time when I clicked on it, unlike all those other
times before I wrote this message, defrag opened and is now working!
Go figure. What I've been finding is that WIN2K is recalcitrant as
compared to Win98SE. After 6 years of using the older OS at home,
I've been finding Win2K's determination to go its own way, and not
_my_ way, very annoying <g>. Can't say why it's now working where for
days it didn't before! <frown> But it is for now.

I'll keep this information, though, as I'm sure this will give me
trouble again. That's what I'm coming to expect from Win2K (at least
until I get to know its quirks ... of which it seems to have quite a
few! <g>).

Thank you!

Does the file exist?
%systemroot%\system32\dfrg.msc

If so what happens when you double-click it? If not you can expand a new
copy of the MSC from your Windows 2000 install CD-Rom

From a command prompt you can expand the file. An example;

expand D:\I386\DFRG.MS_ %systemroot%\system32\DFRG.MSC

would expand a new copy to the \system32 directory.
(note the space between _ and %)

Also you'll want to use the correct version for the service pack level
you're at. So you may need to extract the file from a service pack.

To extract the service pack files without installing them, execute
J:\W2kSP4\W2KSP4.exe /x
Then when prompted, specify a directory to hold the extracted files.
