Windows Update failure

    I've a new PC with Windows XP Pro. When I run Windows Updates, it identifies
    numerous Critical updates. I click the Install button, which downloads the
    updates, but then I receive a message stating that 'the following updates
    were not installed', below is a list of the updates that were to be
    installed. I recieve this message with the express & custom install. The
    automatic Windows Update is turned on but it too is unable to install the
    updates.
    I have added the windows update site to my trusted sites.
    I'd like for this process to work, but don't know why it isn't.
