I have found that if a computer has a NIC without an IP address, the PC will
seem to freeze when looking for remote resources.

I had a computer with a modem and a NIC, the NIC did not have an IP address
and was not getting one via DHCP. When ever I connected to the Internet
using the modem, clicking on a link took forever to bring it up. As soon as
I gave the NIC a private IP address, the problem stopped.
The computer had to search each "network" it was attached to (NIC and Modem)
it seemed to start with the NIC. With no IP address on the NIC, the computer
had a time determining what "network" it was connected to. As soon as I gave
it a private IP address it stopped searching the "private" network for a
public IP address and used the modem.

Maybe this is happening in your case?
