I see. I haven't explored this area, since I do not use the
"desktop" for sharing out data, backing up data to it, etc. The
reason is the "desktop" is actually part of the user profile,
therefore security permissions are controlled by the user
account that owns that specific "desktop." Each profile has a
desktop.
Therefore when you are looking at it from the Network
perspective (as if you were another user on another machine),
you are viewing what is being shared. Apparently it wasn't
shared until you shared it out, then it became available.
The "old" data you may be seeing is still remnant in the
browser service. The Browser Service is what populate the
'browse list," and it may take some time for it to disappear
once it is no longer available or has been unshared.
The best way to get to network resources is by using a direct
mapping of a drive letter to the actual share, or by a UNC
directly to the share. I would not rely on the Browser Service
(Network Neighborhood) for what you are trying to do. It is not
reliable in this respect and causes confusion with many users,
apparently what may be going on here.
I hope that helps explain it.
I also recommend and suggest to back up your data to a child
folder on the C: drive, instead of backing up data to a
profile. What would happen if your user account were to be
deleted? It would delete the profile too, taking the "desktop"
with it. Better yet, it would be better to back up to another
server through a conventional backup solution, or even using a
third party tool such as Second Copy, and then copy the data to
your laptop afterwards.

Thank you for your considered reply.
I think I am guilty of expressing myself badly using terms
which can have several meanings.
I will try again,
I have a backup system Acronis True Image which works perfectly
and I have no trouble with it,
I use my second Computer to store my backup from Computer 1
The process makes use of my Network which shows the structure of
the second computer and enables me to select the correct file
for my backup
This works perfectly.
It is only when I look at the structure of the rest of the
computer that I noticed it does not correspond to the structure
actually in the computer.
It does not cause me any problem apart from an academic point of
view which makes me wonder why this should be?
Hope this makes it clearer
Blair
I see. I apologize for misunderstanding your posts. I'm still not
sure by what you mean "sructure" in the following statement:. I
guess that would involve knowing w
"> It is only when I look at the structure of the rest of the
computer that I
noticed it does not correspond to the structure actually in the
computer."
This can all be due to what you have actually shared on your
machine including the share and NTFS permissions, as well as if
using legacy sharing or Guest access sharing. If I have further
misunderstood, I apologize. I am having problems grasping your
technical terminology in order to apply a solution or
explanation.
There is much involved with troubleshooting Windows sharing
features and the browse service without knowing specfic machine
and network settings and services configurations. It may be
caused by other factors based on your network configuration, if
using WINS, firewalls, antivirus interfering, etc.
I have no further explanation other than possibly the browser
service having issues.
Possibly someone else that is monitoring this thread may have
have a better answer or explanation for you.

Thanks for you help
Structure was the wrong word -I meant a list if items
To simplify if I open Windows Explorer on my Desktop PC I get a
list of items on the PC
If I scroll down to Network and look at the same PC some of the
items listed are different which puzzled me
When I open Windows Explorer on my Laptop PC and look at the same
PC under Network the items are identical as I would have expected.
Blair
I see. That's a little better. So you are saying Network
Neighborhood is showing two different versions or views of what's
been shared, one view from your own machine, and a different view
of what's shared from another machine. This could all be based on
the share permissions. If you look in Computer Management, Shares,
it will show you eveything that's been shared, which you should see
from any machine that the share permissions allow.
Ace
If I may suggest, can you take a screenshot of what you are seeing
from both machines and post them to http://skydrive.live.com to see
exactly what you are seeing, please? Also, a snapshot of the Shares
in Computer Management would help. This way I can compare what's
being shared to what's being seen in Network Neighborhood by both
machines.
Ace
Mail. I'm not sure how I get you to access it
Unfortunately when I tried to do the same on my laptop PC the paste
command was greyed. I used the edit command as well but still greyed
out
I still need your help
Blair
It would appear that the laptop information is the same as the laptop
network information but it is the desktop which is showing a
difference
For instance the network has the following extra items
Documents & settings
Epson
1386
KPCMS
MSO Cash
My Documents
PS Fonts
SC
Shared Documents
I should say that I don't use My Documents but My Own Data for the
data I produce.
Note all my partitions are shared and are indicated by the hand
symbol.
Blair
Unfortunately, it will be helpful to see the screen shots. After you
hit PrtScreen, paste it into MSPAINT, save them. If you said you
uploaded them to skydrive.live.com, what is the URL at the top of your
IE? Post that, it may help.
Ace
I will post the laptop print screen tomorrow
http://cid-b41453ba5946293e.skydrive.live.com/browse.aspx/.Documents
Hope this works
Blair
So far, it appears your computer is called "Desktop." Tell me when you
look at Computer Management, Shares, if all of those shares appear as
shared, and what their SHARE permissions are. The shares in question for
the computer called "Home: are from what I see (and may be truncated due
to where the list stops at i386):
Backup Karen
Bu Acronis
dell
Documents and Settings
EPSON
i386
Ace
I will now try and find what their permissions are
