The action "times out" and Vista says it can't access XXXX (the win2000 pc's name). I don't remember the exact wording, sorry. If I tell Vista to fix it the fix fails with the message that XXXX does not respond to ping. I had already tried unsuccessfully to ping XXXX from the Vista command line so I know this is correct.

From the limited amount you've told us my first guess would be that there is a "security suite" (e.g. McAfee, Norton) running on the Win2K box which has a firewall. It certainly isn't an OS incompatibility, although network browsing is sometimes hampered by the fact that the default workgroup names are different.

Have you tried pinging the IP address instead of the name?

Yes, the same McAfee security suite is installed on both computers. The firewalls are enabled and the LAN's IP address range is entered as "trusted" in the networks section of both. The Vista firewall is turned off. The fact that the Win2000 box can access the Vista shares indicates that the McAfee firewall on Vista is not creating a problem. Since the firewall is configured the same way in Win2000 isn't it reasonable to think that it is not preventing Vista from accessing the shares? Still, when I have an opportunity I will turn it off just to see. Yes, I have tried pinging the Win2000 IP from Vista and cannot do so successfully (100% loss). The workgroup name is simply "workgroup" and it is the same on both machines.
