Renaming of client machines on a domain

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

Hi All

What is the correct way to rename a client machine part of a domain?

Reason I ask is because, when I rename a machine on the network the machine
will still be reporting back using the old machinename for some application
or audit tools on the networks.
Does the registery have to also be ammended or is there a correct way this
is done in on step using a tool?

Thanks

.
