In a nutshell:

Unlike XP, Windows 2000 does not have built-in wireless software, so, as well as the driver for the wireless card, you'll need to have installed software from the manufacturer to manage connections.

So: 1) Have a look in Device Manager to see if the card is shown as "working" and then 2) hunt around for software by the manufacturer. 3) When it shows you a list of available networks, there will normally be a "Connect" button, and if the network is properly set up, you'll need to enter a code of some sort to get on.

The problem deepens... I just learned that their wireless router is a Mac AirPort Express. I see many networks available, but not the one set up by my owner, so I can't connect to that specific one.

Can't imagine why you can't even see the network - Macs are a closed book to me. Try uk.comp.sys.mac perhaps? I fear you may not get anywhere with this unless you can get the base station owner to tweak the relevant settings.
