Re: DNS Not clearing up records

I'll add a little more to my own post on this-
1. I found the "Delete this record when it becomes stale" checkbox. You
have to enable the Advanced view in the DNS MMC. Doh!
2. I came accross this statement in KB174419-
"Note Dynamic updates for subnetted reverse lookups do not work in Windows
2000. The records will need to be added manually. Using "Create Associated
PTR record" checkbox will not work for the subnetted reverse lookup zone
when "A" (host) record is created through GUI."
Again, we have mulitple reverse loookup zones setup, 1 for each subnet. The
subnet's are not classless, though, their standard Class C (255.255.255.0)
so I this flaw in W2k, shouldnt apply to us.
At this point I'm setting up a test Win2k server with DNS, off our regular
network, to do some testing and see if PTR records will actually clean
themselves up. I can then duplicate the settings and zones back to our
production network.
Thanks

Thanks for the reply.
1. When doubling clicking the PTR record, there is no Properties tab,
thus the "Delete this record when it becomes stale" option is not
available. The only 2 tabs are Pointer (PTR) and Security
2. I have confirmed the DNS settings for our DHCP server, and they are
correct on the server and scope level.
I should add to my first post, although we have only the single internal
DNS domain (mycompany.intra) our DHCP server has multiple scopes for
different subnets (192.168.1.x, 192.168.110.x, 192.168.111.x) and son on..
A corresponding Reverse Lookup Zone has been setup for each. In this case
I'm trying to clean up the PTR records for our main scope and Reverse
Lookup Zone (192.168.1.x)
Further suggestions?
Thanks!

Hello,
Thank you for using newsgroup!
From your post, I suggest you check the following settings:
1. Expand Reverse Lookup Zone, double-click the PTR record, on the
properties, make sure the
"Delete this record when it becomes stale" option be checked. If not,
indicate that this record is
a static record, which doesn't apply Aging/Scavenging policy.
2. Check settings on DHCP:
a. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and
then click DHCP.
b. Click the appropriate DHCP server or a scope on the appropriate
DHCP server.
c. On the Action menu, click Properties.
d. Click the DNS tab.
e. To enable DNS dynamic update for DHCP clients that support it,
click to select the
Automatically update DHCP client information in DNS check box. This
check box is selected by
default.
f. To enable DNS dynamic update for DHCP clients that do not support
it, click to select the
Enable updates for DNS clients that do not support dynamic updates check
box. This check box is
selected by default
g. Click to select the Discard Forward Lookups When Leases Expire check
box to have the DHCP
server delete the Host resource record for a client when its DHCP lease
expires and is not renewed.
