VPN client problems

I set up a VPN client to another machine using its IP address with the correct username and password. I connect to the server machine and everything goes fine and I am connected with a VPN client icon for my connection in the system tray.
However 2 problems now ensue:
1) While I am connected I no longer have HTTP access to the Internet. All attempts to go to a web page fail. This is probably true of all other Internet protocols. Once I disconnect I have access to everything again. Although I though my VPN connection through the Internet should allow me to share it with other Internet connections, this does not bother me very much since I need the VPN connection only sporadically and mainly to transfer files back and forth between my client and the VPN server machine. Still this seems a possible problem.
2) While I am connected I attempt to Add a Network Place for my connection. I double-click the Add Network Place icon and fill in a UNC specifying the IP address I used when creating my VPN client and a share at that address. After taking a while I get the message that no network connection can be found. If I just specify for the UNC the IP address in order to pick a share at that address I get the same error. This does affect me as I naturally need a share to access files on the server system.
My VPN connection is through the Internet using a DSL modem connected to a router, a Siemens Speedstream 2604. The router is used so that I can connect another computer to the Internet using the same DSL line and both computers to a local printer.
Anybody have any ideas why I am having my problems and how I can solve them ? I did download and install a Win2k update, Q818043, but this did not solve my problem. I am running Win2K SP4.
