local area connection won't receive

I'm using a Gigafast USB wireless adapter to connect an old but srvicable
Compaq laptop runiing Win 2K Pro to my SMC router which currently links 4
desktops:
2 wired running XP home
1 wired running 2K Pro
1 wireless running XP home

The Gigafast sofware connects to the router and the router software says
that the adapter is connecting successfully (based on MAC address) but
windows cannot connect to the internet and the local area connection
transmits packet but is not receiving.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks
.
