Odd problems with 2nd NIC

OK, this is an odd one -- to me, at least. I've searched around, but
I'm having trouble characterizing the issue for a good search.
Machine: Gigabyte 7DPXDW-P (AMD 762, dual Athlon), 3Ware RAID (7810)
in 64PCI3, ATI RageXL in AGP. The motherboard has a built-in Intel
82559; I've been trying to get a 64-bit gigabit NIC to run in 64PCI1
(the other 64-bit slot). I've tried four -- two Intels and two AceNICs
(old Netgears). The drivers appear to load; the Intel driver happily
works for the 82559 and the gigabit chips, and ProSet runs through its
diags with no failures (except for "connection", of course). My switch
reports all sorts of goofy stuff -- non-IP ethertypes, odd destination
MACs, etc. -- but no FCS errors. Oh -- I've tried crossovers and two
different switches.
So... Anybody seen this, or have any ideas? I can't conveniently
swap the RAID and the NIC -- the IDE cables won't physically fit, and
the OS runs off of it.

Thanks.
