Stop thinking free software is always insecure or whatever. Did you once
hear about Open Source? There are thousands of Enterprise systems that
are running with free software. There are still a lot of people that do
serious things for free. There are much more non-free, so-called serious
software that are bloated with bugs. But you're not one of these who
ignore it, are you?

Kerem Gümrükcü:

As of my own experience, you can try downloading Kerio 2.1.5. It is free
and quite efficient. I have installed it on a test server that is
directly connected to the Internet and I haven't gone into troubles yet.
At least because of intrusions. Don't even think of ZoneAlarm; like
Symantech's, it's a real resource hog. It's friendly but inefficient if
you want to fine-tune filter rules (at least 2-3 years ago). I don't
need more than Kerio has to offer (e.g. no skinning, no nice pictures,
icons, aso).

You should also consider software firewalls can give you the illusion of
being protected. There is no better solution but install a firewall on a
distinct hardware, be it a PC or hardware firewall.

However if you don't mind taking care of several additional steps with a
software firewall, it can be an acceptable solution. One thing I have
noticed using Kerio, for instance, is that you might not see probes on
ports 135-139 if NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled. You should disable
NetBIOS over TCP/IP anyway on public (Internet) interfaces.
