: I have a bizzare problem that I cannot bound TCP/IP to my
: network adapter. It was working fine, but despite having a
: firewall and Norton Anti Virus, my machine became infected
: with a virus.

A firewall doesn't stop viruses or worms, especially if you get them in
email. If a worm was trying to penetrate your network and that port was
closed or restricting services, then perhaps the firewall could be of some
help but only in the case of a worm. A virus attaches itself to a host to
survive and propagate. Worms are self-contained.

Norton, like any antivirus program, protects what it knows. It requires you
keep it updated and running. You also have to use some self control like
not running attachments inside your email, etc.

: I managed to eradicate the virus, but in the process seems
: to have caused problems with this protocol.

Have you reinstalled your driver and latest SP?

: When I now try to re-install TCP/IP, I get the following
: error. non-recoverable error during a database lookup.

So, remove the driver, remove the NIC from the setup, reapply your SP and
reboot. Let the system reinstall the NIC if using Plug-n-Pray, update the
driver and reapply your SP.

: I also have a problem installing the Microsoft Network
: client, saying could not add the requested component, The
: error is 0XC06D007E. I can find no reference to this error.

Which component would that be?

: I have tried uninstalling the network card and deleting
: the associated files and re-installing, but it always
: comes back to the same error.

How about that SP?

: I don't really want to have to re-install Windows 2000.

I wouldn't either and don't see a need to.

: Does anyone know of a way through this problem?

Which specific virus did you have and how did you get rid of it?
