do you have your router set up as a dns proxy? does the xp machine use the
router for dns??
one thing to check on, you say you can't ping beyond your router... some
isp's have blocked icmp traffic because of the volume of it that was caused
by the blaster and welchia viruses so that may not be a valid test beyond
your router any more. surfing, telnet, or ftp would be a better test which
they would not block.
