I have win2K with SP4 running on an ASUS A7V8X mobo with an nvidia
gforce4 mx 4000 video card. Using on board AC'97 default audio; only
other multimedia card installed is a WinPVR TV card. Done all
updates, including mobo bios via 4in1 drivers and video drivers.
Opening the hardware device manager shows no yellow warning marks
anywhere. This machine has worked fine, until the latest series of
"fixes" from the microsoft update site. Now, in the multimedia
section, when I open any of the 11 devices listed and click on the
driver tab, I get:

Windows could not load the installer for MEDIA. Contact your
hardware vendor for assistance. [OK]

The same error comes up 4 times with dxdiag (9.0c installed) during
dxdiag's scan, however the output file shows no errors or problems.

I uninstalled every codec I could find (DivX, Thorica, etc.),
rebooted to safe mode (admin), and attempted to remove any of the
sound devices. The system not only popped up the error windows for
each one, but also told me I could NOT uninstall them (they were
needed to boot the computer, it said). I attempted to update the
driver (vinyl'97) for the wdm by pointing it at a new new file
(alcxwdm0.inf) , but not only did it pop up the installer error, it
also said that it was unable to locate a driver for the device. Note
that windows "reports" that all devices are working properly (HAH!).

In searching the web I found
http://www.computing.net/windowsxp/wwwboard/forum/61021.html (but it
references winXP, but i'm running win2k). There are also references
to the 837119 KB hotfix on the web, but again that's XP, not 2K.

What is going on, and how can I fix this? Does this have anything to
do with the fact that my microphone input doesn't work? Also, in the
Cyan game Uru, some of the textures in the game scenes are whited
out, resembling a snow field. I should NOT have to do a "dirty
install" (I hope), or the gods forbid a format C, but that's too
often the standard response (when in doubt, destroy years of work,
too bad for you). Any help would be appreciated.
