Some sounds play, most don't

As of yesterday morning, the only sounds that can be heard
on my W2K system are the default Windows system sounds
(most of them, but not all of them, even in same
directory). No other sound can be heard (streaming video
on MSN, other WAV files, etc.).

No changes were made, no new sound card, etc. - just
suddenly, the only sounds that can be heard are some of
(but not all of) the Windows system sounds.

Have tried to reinstall drivers, everything shows device
working properly, troubleshooting methods provide no clue
or resolution. Don't know how this could possibly be
relative, but with Windows who can tell...because of a
sudden system shutdown, in booting up yesterday it went
through the automatic scan for errors - after boot up, the
sounds weren't working properly. Even if that did cause
the problem, I don't know how to "unscan" the system, or
fix whatever changes it made but neglected to report to a
    log.

Anyone have a clue as to this illogical problem?

    Thanks for your help!
