I would check for a speed / duplex mismatch on the network card / switch.
Mac's have a lot of trouble connecting if there is any speed duplex
mismatches. even if it is on the server side. Many people force their server
nic to use full duplex, and if the cable gets plugged in a port configured
for auto, this problem will occur. Also use TCP/IP AFP://servername instead
of Appletalk.
