    Subject: DVD RW drive will not read DVD+RW discs.

    I'll first try to specify exactly what kind of hardware I have and then I'll
    describe all actions that I have undertaken prior to writing this post.

    My PC specs are as follows:
    AMD Athlon 2500 XP+ Barton
    Gigabyte K7Triton Series GA-7VT600 1394 VIA KT600 Motherboard
    768 MB DDR PC-400 KingMax CL 2.5 RAM (512 and 256 sticks)
    Leadtek Winfast A360-TDH256 nVidia GF FX 5700 256 MB DUAL
    LG Flatron 900B
    VT8237 RAID0 (64 KB cluster) with two Maxtor DiamondMax 9 Plus 120 GB (228
    GB useable total) 7200 RPM SATA-150 / NTFSx1 partition (boot)
    Sound Blaster Live! 1024 Player (The Original Series) & Dolby Surround 4.1
    Cambridge SoundWorks
    PixelView PV-BT878P+ w/fm (TV/FM tuner)
    PrimaxColorado P600 scaner, Epson Stylus Color 685 printer, A4Tech and
    MT-138 mouse and keyboard
    350 W Enlight PSU

    Onboard LAN, FDD, all ATA and SATA channels and RAID functions are enabled
    (all IDE functions enabled or set to auto).

    All drives connected through 80 cord (66-133UATA) or SATA cables.

    Operating system installed:
    Windows 2000 Professional Service Pack 4 with ALL (including DX 9.0c,etc.)
    additional patches (Microsoft Update) except for "Journal Viewer".
    nVidia ForceWare 56.72 drivers for graphics adapter (monitor *.inf file also
    installed)
    VIA 4in1 4.53 drivers + all additional drivers for in-built features of the
    MOBO downloaded from www.giga-byte.com (latest versions)
    Latest BIOS version (7) downloaded form www.giga-byte.com .
    Latest CreativeLabs SB Live! drivers.
    iuLabs drivers for the tuner:
    - bt848 tweaked Philips WDM TvTuner C2 (PAL D/SECAM D),
    - bt848 tweaked TV WDM Crossbar,
    - PixelView Play TV PACK VideoCapture,
    - Tekram M205 pro - Audio Capture.
    Latest drivers for scanner, printer and keyb&mouse are also present.
    Outpost Firewall and NortonAntivirus present.

    Everything working perfectly in concert, no freezes, no blue screens. System
    is fully capable of running stable for 30 days or more without any problems.

    Recently (two weeks ago) I've decided to replace my TEAC W58E CD-R/RW drive
    with a LiteOn DVD R/RW +/- SOHW1633S drive.

    (<now I'll try to describe step by step what I did; how I discovered the
    problem and what I already tried to get rid of the problem>)

    I've mounted it in a separate 5,25 inch bay and connected it as
    SecondarySlave using a spare power cable and 80 cord ATA cable.

    Computer detected the new drive without any problems running it at
    66UDMA/UATA.

    Windows detected the new drive without any problems. It's described as
    "LITE-ON DVDRW SOHW-1633S" in the Hardware Manager.

    I started using it primarily as a CD-ROM drive, but after a week or so of
    usage I finally decided that I need DVD capacity to transfer some files.

    I've bought two Verbatim DataLifePlus 4x Certified DVD+RW 4,7GB SERL disc
    and decided to write some files on those discs.

    I used Nero Burning ROM 6.3.1.25 to burn a DVD-ISO compilation (all settings
    default, except for changing compilation to "no multisession") of approx.
    4300 MB.

    I was in a hurry, so I only recorded one disc and I did not check if it
    recorded correctly. I took this disc to a friend and this disc was read 100%
    correctly under Windows XP Pro and in a DVD-ROM drive.

    I've returned home to record the second disc. I used same program with same
    settings, compilation again approx. 4300 MB, but this time I've ticked the
    "verify data after writing" box. Data verification failed.

    I've reinserted the disc. Windows Explorer did not recognize the disc
    (empty). Nero also reported the disc to be empty. I've ereased the disc and
    re-recorded the compilation. Again, both Explorer and Nero reported disc as
    empty. I decided to erease the disc completely (instead of just
    "quick-erease") and re-recorded the compilation. Again, disc empty.

    I've took this "empty" disc to my friend's computer (the same as with the
    previous disc) and the disc appeared to be accessible. 100% of data could be
    copied.

    I've returned with both disc home and both appeared as empty. I took both of
    them to a second friend of mine and both discs were accessible (Windows 2000
    Pro SP4, COMBO DVD-ROM/CD-R/RW Toschiba).

    I've checked ATA cable for possible signs of any damage and replaced it with
    a new one, just to make sure. It didn't help. I even tried changing the
    drive's position on the cable (against 80 cord cable's specifications), but
    it did not help.

    I came to a conclusion that either my drive was faulty or both discs were
    faulty somehow. I bought another DVD RW, this time a diffrent brand and
    system. Vakoss DVD-RW 2x compatibile 4,7GB.

    I've recorded some test compilation on it, but recording ended with an error
    message. Later disc was reported as empty but with 0 MB capacity (DVD+RW's
    were reported empty but with full available capacity). I tried to erease it,
    but the process ended with an error.

    At that point I was sure that the drive was faulty but before taking it to
    the shop I've decided to try one thing more. I've unmounted the drive and I
    installed it in my second PC.

    My second PC's specs:
    AMD Athlong XP 1800
    Microstar Industries MS-6330 K7T Turbo RAID VIA KT133a Motherboard
    768 MB SDR PC-133 CL2.5 RAM
    Leadtek Winfast nVidia GF 2 MX-400 64 MB MAX
    Hyundai 17"
    Built in RAID with one Diamond Maxtor 60 GB 7200 RPM UATA-100 / NTFSx1
    partition
    300 W Codegen PSU

    Operating system installed:
    Windows XP Pro with SP1 with some additional patches.
    VIA 4in1 4.51 + some additional drivers for in-built features.
    Original BIOS.

    In the other PC both DVD+RW's were accessible and 100% of the data from both
    discs could be copied.

    Naturally I came to a conclusion that it was not the drive or disc that were
    faulty, but that there was something wrong with my Windows 2000 Pro
    installation.

    On my PC I've uninstalled the drive in Hardware Manager and then deleted all
    entries in the registry, that were related to this drive (search string
    "lite" and second search by search string "SOHW"; naturally I did not erease
    all "lite" findings, only those related to the drive). After restarting, the
    drive was imediatelly detected and installed. Unfortunatelly discs were
    still reported as empty.

    After doing some "googling" I've found this solution on the Internet (and
    also many more, but this one was the closest match):

    This however did not help either. I've tried files from "no sp"
    installation, SP2 and SP4 and also files from clean XP and XP with SP2
    installation. None of this remedied the situation. Finally I upgraded my
    MOBO's BIOS from version "6" to version "7" (with clear DMI and PnP data
    pools option enabled). This did not help either.

    Each time I changed the files I was checking if the disc was readable, then
    erasing it and recording. In Nero disc was always reported as empty. In
    Explorer it was either "empty", "incorrect function" or even "disc not
    formated". Each time disc were perfectly readable in the other PC (each time
    I took the drive and tested those disc in the other PC).

    Finally I decided that there must be something terribly wrong with my
    Windows so I decided to check if the problem persists under a fresh
    installation.

    I installed a:
    Maxtor DiamondMax 9 Plus 80 GB 7200 RPM UATA-100 / NTFSx1 partition

    spare drive in my PC and installed Windows 2000 Pro on it.

    Again, discs were reported as empty. I added VIA 4in1 4.53 and RAID driver.
    Still reported as empty. I installed Nero. Still reported as empty. (each
    time system was restarted). I've ereased the discs and re-recorded them.
    Still empty.

    Finally I patched the Windows with SP4, but this did not help either. I've
    ereased the disc and re-recorded them. Empty.

    Next I formatted the drive and installed Windows XP Pro on it. There was a
    DVD-R icon in the Explorer. Still, discs were reported as empty. The icon
    changed to CD. I've added VIA 4in1 4.53 and RAID driver. Still empty and the
    icon kept changing from DVD-R to CD. A auto-run window kept appearing saying
    that the disc in drive is a CD (not DVD) and that it is empty.

    I tried installing SP1. Same thing all over again. I tried installing SP2.
    Discs still empty. (each and every time I've tried ereasing them and
    re-recording, whole process went 100% ok, but after recording each time disc
    were reported as empty).

    I tried doing exactly what was suggested here:

    thinking that perhaps it would work for XP, although it didn't work for
    2000.

    It didn't work.

    Each and every time I was also checking discs on the other PC and each and
    every time discs were accessible.

    I tried ereasing the disc on the other PC and recording it there (same
    drive, ALL THE TIME!. Everything went fine, disc was accessible. I
    transferred drive and disc to my PC (with Windows 2000 SP4 present at that
    time on the spare drive). Supprisingly, disc was accessible after first
    boot. After restarting ... it was again unaccessible!!

    All CD-ROM's, CD-R's and CD-RW's are accessible. All DVD-ROM's that I have
    are also accessible. I don't have any DVD-R's to test if the problem is
    present for these too. DVD+RW's report as empty, always, but are always
    accessible on other PC's.

    I even suspected Nero, but I tried making and image of an existing DVD-ROM
    (that was accessible) and recording it on a DVD+RW. Again, disc appeared to
    be empty.

    I've contacted the shop where I obtained my LiteON SOHW-1633S drive and
    described the situation. According to them my Gigabyte MOBO is responsible
    for the drive's odd behaviour.

    Question is:
    How to correct this problem and get my DVD drive to work properly? As you
    can see, I've tried more things then any average user would try and I was
    still unable to find a solution. After all those test I tend to agree with
    the shop owner, that the problem is generated by the MOBO and drive
    inability to communicate.

    What's the solution for this?

    Only other thing that could be causing it, that I can think of, would be
    some kind of power failure, but my PSU is brand new and reports:
    VcoreA 1.660V
    +3,3V 3,280V
    +5V 4,880V
    +12V 12,490V
    +5Vsb 4,990V

    PSU in the other PC is much older and readings on it are worse then these,
    yet the drive operates perfectly on the other PC.

    perfectly on his PC:

    The same disc appears as empty on my PC in my LiteON drive.
