For reasons I do not remember I had opened System
Management and happened to look at various items including
    the one outlined below:
     Under Storage/Removable Storage/Physical Locations it
    showed
     x SONY CD-RW CRX 140E
        PIONEER DVD-ROM DVD-105
     x PIONEER DVD-ROM DVD-105
     x PLEXTOR DVDR PX-712A
     x PLEXTOR DVDR PX-712A
     x PLEXTOR DVDR PX-712A
        PLEXTOR DVDR PX-712A
Those with the red x in front of the line showed under
subheading Drives a state of "Not Present"

I of course was now concerned about the obsolete and
duplicate entries which I then deleted. Both drives still
    worked as they should.

I now also checked under System Information and found not
only that the [CD-ROM] section showed "Unknown" under all
10 subsections, but also the unrelated [SCSI] section
showed "Unknown" under all 9 subsections.

Thinking hat my above outlined deletion my have effected
this reporting problem, I re-installed a drive image which
predated the above deletion. The "red X's" are back but
there is no change to the System Information for those two
    sections mentioned.

Under the Device Manager both the optical drives and the
SCSI controller are correctly listed and in all cases
reported as: "This device is working properly". Also the
SCSI devices are correctly shown elsewhere under System
Information, i.e. [IO], [IRQ's] and [Memory]. The various
Event logs do not list any errors.

So, while I repeat, that, notwithstanding the above
observations, "all devises appear to be in good working
order" in line with those observations I have the
    following questions:

    1) Why are those 5 obsolete (1) and duplicate (4) lines
    showing up under System Management?
    2) Should I just ignore this or can I simply again and for
good delete those obsolete lines in the above shown
section under System Management or do I need to undertake
other tasks to effect a change and if so which ones?
    3) With those many O/S fixes by MS and a few BIOS updates
by DELL have there been any changes made or did I do
something to make System Information unable to show data
under those two sections? Yes I made physical changes to
the CD-Rom drives but I didn't change anything pertaining
    to the SCSI controllers.
    4) How can I correct the system so that System Information
again shows up-to-date data under the [CD=ROM] and [SCSI]
    sections?

Anyone able to provide help would probably need info on my
system and the changes I made. Here is that info.

    Available Virtual Memory 1,684,696 KB
    Page File Space 1,538,796 KB
    Page File C:\pagefile.sys
    Page File D:\pagefile.sys

Dual booting between ME and W2k Pro
    Two physical SCSI drives
Drive "0" partitioned into J: = ME (and shows as C:
    under ME), C: = W2k and E: = Data
Drive "1" partitioned into D = (holds page files for ME
    & and (major portion) for W2k). F: = Data Bkup, G: = Sdry
    Pgr., H: = Sdry1 and I:= Sdry2.
Formatting: J: and D as FAT32 and can be seen by ME, The
rest as NTFS and cannot be seen by ME.

    Changes made
Right at the outset I disabled the onboard Sound card and
installed the Soundblaster Life! Platinum (4760) card
including supplied software but games software only
installed under ME. I also immediately installed a DVD/CD
reader "PIONEER DVD-ROM DVD-105" since such was at that
time not available from Dell for this system. All worked
from the outset and has never giving any problems.

The factory installed CD burner "SONY CD-RW CRX140E"
exhibited some problems, mainly with formatting CDRW
media, which my Dell Inspiron 8200 Laptop would format,
although I noted later on that some CDRW disks exhibited
some read errors, so perhaps the fault was the media not
    the drive.

In any event the Sony was rather slow and, by to-day's
standards is now well outdated, I was in need of a DVD
burner, need for USB 2 for faster transfer of data between
Laptop and Desktop and a video recorder card (including
hardware MPEG encoder) to convert my Cannon Hi8 movies to
    DVD.
Thus early June 2004 I purchased
       _the Plextor PX-712A DVD +/- R/RW/CD-R/RW drive
_the Adaptec Duo Connect Combo FireWire and USB 2.0
    card (AUA-3020) and
       _the Hauppauge! WinTV-PVR 350 card.

    1) I removed original Firewire card from the 32-bit PCI
slot and installed the Adaptec card in the middle 64-bit
PCI slot, since the documentation stated that it could be
installed in either a 32- or 64-bit PCI slot, freeing thus
a 32-bit slot for the PVR card which didn't specifically
outline such choice. I installed the drivers under both
O/S's and both O/S's recognized the replaced card and it's
location. Installed on W2k only the USBControl software.
    2) Removed old original Sony C/D burner and placed
existing Pioneer DVD/C/D reader in int's (top) spot and
attached to CSEL Cable Select Cable on Secondary IDE
controller Cable which has in the first spot the L-120
Floppy drive. Changed of course the default jumper
location from Master to CSEL Cable Select. Attached
analogue wire to soundcard. Placed new Plextor PX-712A
Internal ATAPI Drive in the bottom Spot and connected as
Master (leaving Jumper in it's default position) to the
Primary IDE controller Cable. (Slave is empty.) Attached
digital wire to soundcard. Both W2k and ME recognized both
drives under the changed set-up and installed the drivers.
Installed only under W2k Roxio Easy CD & DVD Creator
version 6 (all) "The Digital Media Suite" and it
automatically un-installed the earlier version first. Did
not install all supplied remaining software but did
install (under W2k only) PlexTools Pro. Since updated
FIRMWARE of DVD burner twice to keep to latest version.
Testing both drives they worked as they should for all
    media.
    3) Put new Hauppauge! WinTV-PVR (personal video recorder)
350 TV and FM tuner card into the under the previously
vacated 32-bit PCI slot. Both O/S's recognized it and I
installed the supplied drivers. Installed most but not all
of the supplied software under W2k only. All tests turned
    out o.k.

An older printout of System Information I have on file
showed the following: (Don't know why one line reads "SCSI
Target ID" as all my optical drives have been and are IDE
    (ATAPI) devices.)
