How to check the health of my lans/internet connection

I'm running Windows 2000 and connect to the Internet thru
a router and a DSL modem. My second LANs computer is seldom
turned on. My connection appears to be about 188kB/sec via
my Verizon telephone line. Best thing I've ever seen sinced
'sliced bread'.

I've been using DU Meter v3.0 to indicate on my screen the
ul/dl performance of the Internet data.

Also there is another indicator on the taskbar called the
'Local Area Connection Status' which tells me that the LANs
is running at 100Mbps.

But what's bothering me is that the sent/received rates
indication while downloading files from the internet.

            Packets
  Sent 47,000 Received 93,200

Could someone explain why so much handshaking (50%) occurs
thru the LANs connection.

The DU Meter normally indicates my downloads as being

  DL: 188kB/sec UL: 3.1kB/sec

Which is a much smaller amount of handshaking (1.64%).

And what tool(s) could I use to get a greater breakdown
report of performance of my LANs and Internet DSL connection.
