Folder Redirection - My desktop LINKED to user root directory

I set up a folder redirection GPO for my documents and desktop. I've
applied it to just my account for testing. Under my documents I
selected basic redirect everyone's to the same location and for
target selected redirect to the user's home directory. That worked
fine.
For the desktop I chose basic redirect everyone's folder to the same
location and for a target the same option isn't available to choose
the users home directory. I chose redirect to the following location.
For root path I selected the users root directory and mistakenly left
it at that!
As a result after gpupdate and a restart ALL the user folders are on my
desktop and all the icons from my desktop are now on the user root
folder. If I delete anything off my desktop it is also deleted from
the user root. Anything created or deleted in user root also
disappears off of my desktop.
I have the settings to redirect back to the local profile when removed
option. I have removed enforcement of the policy and no change. I
have changed the policy back manually put each item back on the local
user policy with no change. I have taken the enforcement of the policy
off, removed the link, made the changes and re-applied with no change.
What more can I do??
