None of the Office programs (Word, Excel, Access) have this problem. But my audio editing program, Cool Edit Pro, and my picture viewer, Irfan, both have the problem.

FWIW, I use a program called System Mechanic, and one of its tools compacts the registry. I really can't correlate the problem to when I last compacted the registry. But since I wasn't anticipating the problem and thus not looking for it, SM may have caused it.

Any suggestions for curing it?

Open Windows Explorer in the Folders view, click on the Name column to sort alphabetically, then hold Ctrl down while closing the window by clicking on the X in the top right corner.
