In the good old days (up until about three weeks ago), when I went to open or save a file, the dialog box would display the existing folders in alphabetical order, followed by files in alphabetical order. Now, with some programs, the dialog box shows the files and folders (in the list view) in what appears to be in random order.Open Windows Explorer in the Folders view, click on the Name column to sort alphabetically, then hold Ctrl down while closing the window by clicking on the X in the top right corner.
While the dialog box is in view, if I click on View Menu, choose Details, then click on the Name column, the folders will appear first in alpha order, followed by the files in alpha order, just as I want. But the next time I try opening or saving a file, the dialog box doesn't remember my last settings, but reverts to showing files and folders in random order.
None of the Office programs (Word, Excel, Access) have this problem. But my audio editing program, Cool Edit Pro, and my picture viewer, Irfan, both have the problem.
FWIW, I use a program called System Mechanic, and one of its tools compacts the registry. I really can't correlate the problem to when I last compacted the registry. But since I wasn't anticipating the problem and thus not looking for it, SM may have caused it.
Any suggestions for curing it?
Thanks,
Ray
