As a last ditch you might also try from a 'Safe Mode' boot to rule out some application interference.

Thank you for all your help.I do have an old system p3 733mhz 392
ram. However i am choosy with my apps and dont use any resource hogging
programes.Indeed my physical ram usually never drops below 160m of
ram.I know its low but i basically use this pc for browsing so dont
need huge amounts of ram.I use a cpu monitor in system tray to see if
its busy ,and after all my apps has loaded it usually sits on around 6%
cpu used.I have reinstalled sp4 but nothings altered.I will look at my
applications next to try and see if theres a problem there.I know that
my firewall (sygate pro) can sometimes take an age to load and its
process smc.exe can use a lot of processor when this happens.Ill
disable all my apps and go from there. If that doesnt work ill go
through all those links and try that ,so i guess i wont reply for a
little while.I hvanet really bothered with the performance monitor
before so dont know whther its always behaved that way on my
machine.Other than that my pc works fine with no problems that im aware
of.The thought of it not working though bugs me (even though i dont use
it i like things to work) and i may reinstall windows at some point
just to see if it ever did work on this system.
Thanks again for all your(and others)invaluable help ,and ill post back
with any results.
