I hadn't thought of that, and I think you nailed it. Unlike the laptop, with
the desktop, until you insert a USB flash drive, there is nothing to remove.

It may not be quite what you think. I have that icon there all the

on my laptop too with nothing plugged into a USB port but that's

the icon refers to the DVD-ROM drive which is hot-swappable.

If you right-click on the icon and select "unplug or eject hardware",
it will give you a list of things that it is protecting.
