Certificates console snap-in not displaying certificates installed on server

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

we run a web server on windows 2000 server with IIS 5. I recently
wanted to access the SSL certificates for the 10 or so sites, but am
not able to view them with the Certificates snap-in.

to get to the snap-in, I have done the instructed Start > Run > "mmc" >
Console > Add / Remove Snap-in > Click Add... > Select Certificates >
Select Computer account > Local Computer > and out.

when the Certificates root node shows up initially, there is the plus
that indicates there are child items, but clicking on it does not
expand anything, or there is nothing there. nothing underneath it in
the tree view, and nothing in the right panel.

there doesn't seem to be any errors associated with it either. nothing
in the event log, no dialog boxes showing up.

MMC will occasionally crash unexpectedly, and I have seen an error
about memory, but not while I'm performing the steps above.

the certificates are working in the context of IIS, and I can view and
select them for a site within IIS administration.

any ideas what is going on?
