Thanks for that. I'll pass it to the ERP vendor for them to investigate.

Hi,
Could anyone advise as to how I can get German
reply,theonesi.e.
with
umlauts to display on an English Server. At present
when
someGerman
ERP
system outputs the characters they display as slashes
or
other
dubuious
symbol and this starting to cause us some problems.
Many thanks in advance
Jez
It depends on the application. While I'm writing this
andI
holdingcan
get my Umlaute in the usual way by turning on NumLock,
numericdown an Alt key and typing 0228 or 0246 or 0252 on the
exmaplekeypad in order to obtain Länder, Söhne and Sünde. We have multi applications which display this issue, for
whichif I
characterscapture some output from the ERP system, which displays the
symbols, correctly, then open it in Notepad it displays the spurious

display the spurious characters.
Have a look at the attached notepad file. Do the characters
display correctly? If they do, attach your own notepad file
whose characters do not display the way you expect
I'm unable to see the attached file when I view this thread.
Please be a little more specific so that I do not have to guess
WHY you cannot see the attached file. Do you use Outlook
Express as a newsreader? Is your Security under the Tools
menu set so that attachments are suppressed? Do you use
some other newsreader? Where is the file that I suggested you
should attach?
I suspect you're using Google Groups and I think that Google Groups
will not allow you to attach files or to read attachments. You now
have three choices:
- Use Outlook Express as your newsreader, specifying
news.microsoft.com as your newsreader. This will allow you
to view threads in microsoft.public.win.general.
- Quote a valid EMail address, suitably encoded, that I can
send my sample text file to.
- Wait until someone else picks up your question and proposes
an answer without asking for a sample file.
perfectly.openned it on the server in question and I can see the umlauts
theIt
seems to be something to do with the way the ERP system is generating
txt files.
I repeat my request: Post a sample file!
Sample file as requested is attached
Many Thanks
Getting this file was about as hard as extracting a tooth . . .
The file you generated is NOT a text file. It is probably a print
file. Here is what it looks like:
000000 1B 26 61 2B 30 30 32 31 36 48 20 20 20 20 20 44 ?&a+00216H D
000010 8E 4E 45 4D 41 52 4B 20 20 20 20 20 20 20 20 20 ÄNEMARK
000020 20 20 20 20 20 20 20 20 20 20 20 20 20 20 20 20
000030 20 20 20 44 8E 4E 45 4D 41 52 4B 20 DÄNEMARK
The first character is an "escape" character, which often
initiates a command that printers can understand. The following
14 characters are part of this printer instruction.
I recommend you have a closer look at your application and
how to get it to generate text files. This is definitely not a
Windows 2000 problem but one that is specific to your
application.
Once again thanks for your help and pointers
.
