There is a system service which needs to be disabled, or at least the
process killed. I have tried logging in as administrator and even then
I am unable to terminate it.

The Stop / Pause option for the service is grayed out. Is there any way
around it?

Thank you in advance.

Run services.msc, then disable the service and reboot the machine.
