W2K Won't Launch

I was using the program "Eraser" to clean up my Dell W2K laptop boot drive when the drive started thrashing and a blue screen came up about a system dump starting, but never went away. So I tried rebooting, but got the "Sorry for the inconvenience but Windows did not shut down properly, etc." blue screen.

I tried every option shown on that screen - normal booting, last good configuration, safe mode, safe mode with dos, tried running chkdsk, etc., and always end up with the same "blue screen of inconvenience" in the middle of the standard "Windows is starting up" screen (the one with the progress bar at the bottom).

Any ideas on what to try next?
