We have a 2K server, and all of our Mac Clients (10.3.9+) are having issues
in that many of the files are in a 8.3 format. This is a problem for many
like named files, and was wondering if this is strictly based on the 31/32
character limit of AFP 2.2 or what and also if anyone knows of a direct work
around or update in Win2K or if the third part solution is the route to take
and if there are any recommendations that are proven to work. Also, I am
wondering if this could be te result of any "illegal" characters in the file
name past the first 8.
SFM only supports 31 characters but your Macs are probably trying to
access files that are longer than 31 characters. These may have been
placed on your server with Windows, which can support up to about 255
characters.
SFM is ancient and hasn't been updated in several years and about three
versions of Windows Server. I suggest you look into using another AFP
server called ExtremeZ-IP from http://www.grouplogic.com. It's
up-to-date with AFP 3.2, which is what current Macs are using.
Or you can move away from AFP and look into using SMB, but I don't
suggest using the SMB client that's built into Mac OS X. It's not
up-to-date enough to be compatible with today's Windows. You can look
into Dave or ADMitMac from http://www.thursby.com.
Both offer trial versions of their software.
