Re: System automatic rebooting cycle after installation.

Thanks for the response. Although I have tested the hardware, I will replace
the suggested hardware and see if it makes a difference. If it does not fix
the problem, I will continue the thread.

Thanks

Sounds like some bad hardware. I'd start with the RAM followed by graphics

| The History:
|
| I am working on a friend's computer, who due to a failed hard drive, was
| forced to buy a new 80GB drive. See below for the system contents.
|
| The system is five years old, and has been working just great with Windows
| 2000 since he purchased it. If the original hard drive hadn't failed he
| would still be completely happy with
|
| the system. And before anybody suggests upgrading to Windows XP, he
cannot
| afford to upgrade his computer to meet the requirements and having been
| forced to use Windows XP
|
| on work notebook, he doesn't really want to go through the upgrade
process.
| The system is a stand-alone desktop, used for primarily for personal use,
but
| he also has a very part time
|
| business and uses the computer for his spreadsheets, and connects to the
| internet via dial-up service, there are no other connections.
|
| The Problem:
|
| After physically installing the new WD 80GB hard drive, I then installed
| Windows 2000 from his originally CD which is in immaculate condition,
having
| only been used a couple of times
|
| when he first purchased the computer. After the installation is complete,
I
| then took the steps as detailed below, and eventually ran into the problem
of
| the system cycling through a
|
| reboot, reload windows to just before the logon screen, reboot; that has
| become very frustrating.
|
| Attempts to resolve the Problem:
| 1. Loaded Windows 2000 after partitioning the drive into two equal
| partitions. Partition 1(C) will contain Windows 2000 and all other
programs.
| Partition 2(D) will contain all his data.
| a: Updated Windows to Service Pack 4, rebooting the system as required.
| b: Downloaded and installed all the current updates, rebooting the
system
| as required.
| c: Installed Nero Ahead DVD/CD software.
| d: Rebooted the system as required by the Nero software, and the system
| then started the automatic reboot cycle.
| e: Attempted to boot into the Last Known Good Configuration, but the
| system continued the reboot cycle.
| f: Booted into Safe Mode, but couldn't find anything wrong.
| g: Rebooted out of Safe Mode, but the system couldn't get out of the
| reboot cycle.
| h: Attempted to boot into Safe Mode again, but the system wouldn't bring
| up the boot-up options menu.
|
| 2. Started the Windows 2000 Installation again, and when given the
| installation options, I deleted both partitions and recreated them with
| partition 1(C) being 35GB and the balance
|
| going to partition 2(D).
| a: Updated to Service Pack 3.
| b: Downloaded and installed all the current updates, rebooting the
system
| as required.
| c: Downloaded and installed Avast AntiVirus.
| d: Rebooted the system as required by the Avast software, and the system
| then started the automatic reboot cycle.
| e: Attempted to boot into the Last Known Good Configuration, but the
| system continued the reboot cycle.
| f: Attempted to boot into Safe Mode, but the system wouldn't bring up
the
| boot-up options menu.
| g: Started Screaming and Cursing and tearing more Hair out of my head,
| don't have much hair left anyway.
|
| 3. I booted the computer with my Micro2000 diagnostic disk, and tested
all
| components in the system including the new hard drive.
| a: I then booted with the Micro2000 Diagnostic Probe Card, and yet
again,
| couldn't find anything wrong.
| b: Tried installing a copy of Windows 98SE, after wiping the drive and
| formatting into two partitions of equal size.
| c: Updated Windows 98SE.
| d: Installed Nero Ahead software, and rebooted as required.
| e. Installed Avast Antivirus, and rebooted as required.
| f: Installed Office 2000 Standard, and rebooted as required.
| g: Shut down the system and left it overnight.
| h: Following day, started up the computer and ran it without any
problems.
| i: Started the Windows 2000 Installation again, and when given the
| installation options, I deleted both partitions and recreated them with
| partition 1(C) being 32GB and the balance
|
| going to partition 2(D).
| j: I left Windows with just Service Pack 2, and did not install any
| updates.
| k: I installed Office 2000 Standard, and rebooted the computer.
| l: The system kicked into the automatic reboot cycle AGAIN!
| m: I attempted to get into the start up menu before loading Windows 2K
| but could not. I am now at the end of my rope, with my friend starting to
| question my sanity and my kids
|
| wondering who the bald man is sitting at their father's desk.
|
| Note: I have searched both the Microsoft Knowledge Base and the Windows
| 2000 newsgroups for this specific question, I found similiar items, but
the
| resolutions did not work so this
|
| must be something different.
|
| Any help, suggestions or recommendations would greatly appreciated.
