I recently gave my mother my old computer with a Windows NT operating
system. It was password protected. I can't remember the password. And
we're in different states so I can't go to her home and tinker with the
machine.

Her tech knowledge is even less than my own. Short of paying someone
too much money to go to her place and fix/bypass the login box that
pops up when she turns the computer on, is there a simple fix I can
walk her through over the phone? Or is there an inexpensive software I
can purchase for her to fix this problem?


I think you're stuck. The standard password resetting tool is
based on a boot disk from the link below which is just about
the opposite of user-friendly. Try it for yourself so that you
see what I mean.

Your situation is easily avoided by planning ahead. You have
at least two sets of keys for your car, for obvious reasons, so
you create two admin accounts on your Windows machine,
for equally obvious reasons. You then lock the details for the
second account away until you need them.
