I have a NAS drive that is accessed only occasionally. To avoid the power,
heat and noise associated with continuous operation I would like to make it
sleep (power down) after a period of inactivity (this is provided for in
the NAS setup).
However, to suit a couple of applications I need to have the NAS mapped to
a drive letter.
Problem is that whenever I open <My Computer> or any any File open/save
dialog (whether or not I want to access the NAS drive) the system scans
all drives and wakes up the NAS. This not only means a considerable delay
but makes the sleep setting rather pointless.
My only solution so far is to set the sleep timeout to a high value so
that the device basically only turns off when I'm not around which is only
half a solution.
I just thought I'd ask whether there was any way to "exempt" the NAS drive
from the scan (or whatever happens that wakes it up).
Not sure if it'll help but have you tried
Open My Computer
Tools
Folder Options
View
and unticking Automatically search for network folders and printers
