Hi
I'm trying to install win2000 on a pc which had some other windows
version on the hard disk previously (so all the cabling, jumpers, cmos
should be setup correctly for that hard disk) but when it boots up off
the cd, I get the following message "Couldn't open the boot partition
to check for a signature. SETUPLDR: couldn't open drive
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)". I have tried different hard disks
and get the same error message. I have tried a different win2000 cd
(same error) and a winNT cd (very similar message). I looked through
the CMOS and couldn't see an option for "protecting the boot sector
against viruses". All suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks a mil.
Try some basic stuff such as this:
1. Boot the machine with a Win98 disk from www.bootdisk.com.
2. Run fdisk.exe and delete all existing partitions.
3. While still in fdisk, create the partitons you want.
4. Format the partitions you created.
If this works then you should be able to perform a normal
Win2000 installation with your Win2000 CD. If it does not
then report the results here.
