Windows 2000 and XP are virtually the same (NT 5.0 and 5.1).
As far as I know, there is nothing different kernel-wise.
Some programs are written to check for "Windows XP" in the registry.
You could try changing
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProductName
to say "Windows XP" instead of "Windows 2000" to try and fool the program.

Hi,
Some applications (like Adobe Photoshop Elements 4.0) are available only
for Windows XP but not any longer for Windows 2000.
Which of Windows XP's features are used by these applications which are
not available within Windows 2000?
Or is it just a matter of marketing?
Regards,
