USB Problem

Set Up: Windows 2000; 4 port self powered USB hub from one of two USB
sockets, other socket vacant; external USB CD burner and USB WiFi
dongle into hub...
Problem: Computer spontaneously loses all USB devices including the
hub after varying periods of time {can be seconds, can be hours} USB
device unplugged warning appears on screen when it does...
Devices can be spontaneously refound; if rebooted sometimes the devices
are refound and sometimes not...
Device manager before loss: Universal serial bus controllers - Generic
USB hub - Intel 82371 AB/EB PCI to USB universal host controller - USB
mass storage device - USB root hub...
Device manager after loss: Universal serial bus controllers - Intel
82371 AB/EB PCI to USB universal host controller - ! USB device - USB
root hub...
Does anybody have any ideas as to what might be going on here, and if
so any suggestions as to what might rectify the problem...
