| Thanks, I it & was beginning to mess with it. Trend found beagle, but I had
| to stop the scan because of other issues. Going to go through a complete
| scan using all 4 tonight.
|
| The hosts file had many MS sites set to 127.0.0.1 . I replaced that file
| with another. Now I can get to MS sites except
| windowsupdate.microsoft.com. Now it seem to get re-directed somehow to
| msn.com. I can now ping windowsupdate.microsoft.com (before it came up as
| 127.0.0.1), Firefox can go there (but of course not use it) but MS IE goes
| to MSN for some reason.
|
| I am thinking a flush is in order here, new build won't take much longer
| than trying to remove whatever it is infected with. I am going to run that
| AV stuff you linked first, if nothing else, I am curious about it & it seems
| very cool. =)

YW. If is is not a virus than you may have adware/spyware. Probably a Browser Helper
Object redirecting IE away from the windows update web site.
For non-viral malware...
Please download, install and update the following software...
* Ad-aware SE v1.06 http://www.lavasoft.de/ http://www.lavasoftusa.com/
* SpyBot Search and Destroy v1.4 http://security.kolla.de/
After the software is updated, I suggest scanning the system in Safe Mode.
I also suggest downloading, installing and updating BHODemon for any Browser Helper Objects
that may be on the PC.

Yes, I generally use the "big three", but this being Win2K I could only use the 2 you suggested. Yes it found stuff. No it did not repair the problem. BHODemon looks cool. The guy says no more updates for it though. =( Think maybe it's still useful? I steer away from non-supported/updatable anti-malware software because sometimes malicious software will be written specifically targeting the un-updated software.
The computer's owner took his machine today. Bringing it back Friday & I plan on wiping it & starting from scratch, new build time.
Again, thanks for your help.
