Maybe a2 gives "false" positives, hard to say, maybe it's better than the others and does find stuff the others can't. If Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D, your Norton installed AV and the online AV scan all tell you that you are clean then you're probably free of pests. As for the 54 processes just do a search on each of them, you will get the needed information, who knows maybe one of them is a pest. That mailwasher link works here...

I have now done most of the virus checking through the sites you recommended. For info the 'Mailwash' site was unobtainable from the address you gave - I had to get it from a google search. The Symantec security site took over 2 hours to interogate my files for threats and particularly viruses. The end result (so I am told) is that I am virus clear and have protection against all known threats. Thank you for this advice, I shall now revert to my original task of trying to reduce the 54+ running processes using the helper files you sent in your first email - though I fear I do not have the knowledge or information to asses each file.
I will debate Uninstalling a2 as it still throws up all sorts of pop up warnings about my basic programmes (Outlook, Internet Explorer, Broadband etc) despite all others saying they are now clear.
Once again thanks for your help in the threats and virus battle.
Yours
