If possible...
1. Plug the HDD into a second computer as a slave or secondary drive.
2. Copy off all those years of data to DVD or other HDD.
3. Put it back into your original PC.
4. Reinstall windows. If your install fails, then you will know (only
then) if you've a serious hardware issue.

Just buy another HDD, remove the cover from your computer, (that has been unplugged), stick the HDD in a slot over or under your other HDD, put in a couple of screws to hold it there, find the power cord going to the first HHD and on the end will be another plug that will fit the new HDD. ...
