RE: win2ksp4 - cannot stop/start services, install/uninstall software,

Hi
I am experiencing a similar problem. My W2K SP4 server has backup exec and
sophos antivirus loaded which I believe is similar to you Jim. Tape drives
are indicated as being offline. If you use drive properties in backup exec to
disable them and then enable the drives they then indicate that they are
online, but if you then try to use the drives the job monitor shows the drive
as paused. Can not start or stop any services through either mmc or command
line. This of course means that the windows installer service cannot start so
you cannot install or uninstall anything including drivers. I can start in
safe mode and change the startup properties of services thereby disabling
services or putting them into manual state.

The server still functions as file and print server but no backups are
running.

Full virus scan shows nothing.

ANY IDEAS welcome!!!!!!!
