I heard or read some time ago that the service pack (or hotfixes, I can't remeber) refuse to install, because the ntoskrnl.exe has an illegal checksum.

Yes, this is true, and I *strongly* advise against modifying
NTOSKRNL.EXE and BOOT.INI to have a modified boot logo.
