How to PXE boot to Server without RIS

Tech Tip: Click here to run a free scan for Windows Errors and optimize PC performance

Hi,

Found this out recently and thought I would pass it along.

There is a PXE boot driver for Linux that works on Windows server and
allows you to setup a TFTPD Server without having RIS installed.

As I use imaging Software, I don?t use RIS. I was pretty tired of
using Floppy Disks. This does use an "image" of a floppy disk but
connects to the server via PXE. You can then load any "floppy image"
you want.

My clients connect via PXE to my Server and then load the Floppy Image
and then run the imaging software to create an image on my machine.

Some things to note. Don?t be confused, You want tftpd.exe Not
tftp.exe. Also, when you add the "Parameters" in the Registry, make
sure it is capitalized. You can use Winimage (trial) to create ANY
boot disk image you want. Basically just install the program and put a
Bootable floppy that you are using. Make an image(s) and store it in
the C:\tftproot directory that you will create. I have one I use
that isn?t that great. Better to make your own. The image included is
just for testing

You will need to enable the PXE boot option on your machines. It is
pretty much available only with built-in NIC?s that I can see. However
Dell and IBM work great even from the old P2?s that I have. The NIC
needs to be enabled with PXE in the BIOS.

Cheers,

Lara
