Adjusting connection timeout

I've set up a small home server machine which hibernates and is configured to
wake up on LAN access.
I'm connecting to services on the server machine from another running Win2K
SP4, and want to adjust any connection timeouts or retry counts to allow
sufficient time for the server to wake up fully. This currently takes 30-40
seconds, which is too long for the client machine - it will report an error.
After waiting sufficient time, retrying the connection manually will work -
however, I'd be happier with more seamless operation.
The network protocol is TCP/IP; the services I'm using from the server are
file & printer sharing, Perforce, mySQL and Apache.
Any advice on settings or tweaks I can try would be much appreciated! Thanks
in advance...
