That's correct. They either support just BootP or BootP/DHCP. The older HP 170x models
that only support BootP will NOT get an IP stack from a DHCP server. Newer models do
support both protocols and DHCP is actually a successor protocol to BootP. However DHCP
tends to dynamically provides the IP stack while BootP statically provides the IP stack
based upon the MAC address. But additionally BootP allows you to assign an ASCII
configuration file to configure the print server for security, protocol and other
information. Attached is a sample configuration file for the HP J6039C. To get the
configuration file one would also need a TFTP daemon. There are programs that support both
and are often tied together as a BootP/TFTP daemon. Nortel networks has one from when it
bought Bay Networks and their utility (which is hard to find) is used in conjunction with
their equipment but can be used in conjunction with other equipment such as managed Ethernet
Switches. There are free WINSOCK complaint tools available. I personally use the
Hummingbird Exceed suite of TCP/IP utilities. It includes both BootP and TFTP Daemons and I
setup a Network Management Station for supplying information to HP JetDirect, Network
Management Modules and Ethernet Switches on my LAN.

| My experience/knowledge may be limited in this area, but any HP Jet Direct
| (including very old ones that only claim to support bootp) can get IP
| configuration from a DHCP server. My understanding is that most (if not
| all) DHCP servers will respond to bootp requests.
