I have an ongoing problem, not sure what to do next.
Server2k3 (AD)1 box, 10 PCs Win2kSP4, dialup with ICS
newly installed network cabling (tested), new hardware, 3com 16 port
switch
a few clients (doesn’t seem like all of them) get hung up when
accessing their home drive on the server (or opening an office
document, office hangs) and sometimes just after logging in,
unplugging the network cable will clear it up and they can resume
again with no problems until later when it happens again, maybe 5 or 6
times a day or more.
Sometimes the server gets a repeated event id 1058(can’t access
gpt.ini)and sometimes there is nothing logged on either side,
sometimes the client gets event id 1000(can’t unload registry file).
I have been told that my problem is that I have ICS working on AD. I
haven’t seen this related to the event ids I’ve been experiencing.
I’ve been troubleshooting the 1058 without luck, clearing the
MupCache, got the hotfix from MS, etc.
So, my next option is to put Linux Smoothwall Gateway/Firewall instead
of ICS, but anyone have any suggestions as to how to methodically
troubleshoot this? Seems I just go in circles without solving or
eliminating anything. It seems like more of a physical problem to me,
but that seems hard to fix without being able to replace the switch.
