Script problem?

I've begun to have a weird problem that I'm hoping someone
can shed some light on (Dell Latitude 860, SP4, W2K):
when I click on, say, a film file in one of my folders, I
get some sort of security script message ('file has
changed, do you want to accept script?') and then the
folder contents disappear and I get a little box with a
little dot in the middle, barely decipherable, in the upper
left corner. All folders revert to this and I have to
reboot to get back the folder contents. A few desktop icons
also move and the 'my documents' icon disappears completely
(until rebooting).
