Hello, I have a big problem with opening XP Pro in my duel boot
configuration. I have 2 hard drives with W2K Pro sp4 on Hard Drive C: and XP
Pro on Hard Drive F: When I start the computer I get the choice of selecting
which OS to open. W2K Pro became very slow and unstable from so many
programs loaded and uninstalled on it, I use it to test programs. So I
decided to do an upgrade on it with the W2K CD. I uninstalled sp4 and W2K
went back to the original installation W2K Pro sp2. I then loaded W2K and
put in my W2K CD it started and ask if I wanted to up grade or new install.
I did an upgrade so I would not lose my good programs on that disk. It did
an upgrade without issues. I needed to load 1 driver one for my HP printer
and my W2K OS was back to being stable and fast without any issues. Then I
loaded sp4 again IE 6 sp 1 and all of the updates. My W2K was running like
it did when first installed, fast and without any problems. All good
programs were there and working great. I thought wow look what I did. I am
not a computer geek, I am beginner. So I shout down the computer and
restarted it and the screen come up which OS I wanted, I chose XP Pro and I
for this error: "Windows 2000 could not start because the following file is
missing or corrupt: \windows\system32\config\systemd startup options for
windows 2000" I shutdown the computer and started it all over again making
sure a chose the right os, I did choose XP and got the same error. I
restarted the computer and chose W2K Pro to see if it would load and it
loaded fine. Worked fine. So I am not so great after all fixing it. I do
know about the boot.ini file and here is a copy of that file>
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000
Professional" /fastdetect
I can go to windows explorer in W2K and see Drive F: and I can click on it
and it will open in W2K but nothing will run, I tried to go to my account
and it said access denied. I can open window folder but I do not know what
all those files mean. What I do know I fixed W2K Pro and messed up getting
to XP Pro. And XP pro is what my family uses. Thank you for any help or
advice getting to XP Pro.
