Win2000 Pro power cycles after defrag

I defrag'd my wife's Win 2000 Pro machine this evening. Now the machine will
not boot. The Intel line comes up, then the Dell splash screen, then the
WIndows boot screen (e.g. the Windows graphic with the progress bar) comes up
and the progress bar finishes. A few seconds later, though, the machine power
cycles and restarts. Every time. I tried hitting F8 when the Windows boot
screen came up - I get the menu, but even choosing "safe mode" etc has the
same effect.

Any suggestions?
