I'm running Windows 2000 Professional on my computer (1200Mhz, 256MB RAM,
Sound Blaster Audigy, LITE-ON 48x12x48 cd burner drive) after having used
Windows 98 SE on it. It's a dual-boot system, so I doubt that having
residual files /settings/drivers left over from Win 98 is the problem...
In Win 98, I could have Nero burn a cd while WinAmp continued to play music.
In fact, I could have WinAmp playing uninterrupted while doing any sort of
cd-related activity I pleased, from burning to simply browsing the files via
Explorer.
However, under Win 2k, I can't. When the cd drive is in use for whatever
reason, it isn't only WinAmp's output that suffers, it's all sound on the
computer in total, from the ding in MSN Messenger telling me I've typed to
the limit to the little click in IE when I follow a link. The sound is
overly loud and skips horrendously, turning the simple ding or click into
several seconds of grating noise.
This problem isn't present on another Win 2k Pro machine I have access to
(only 500 Mhz, and a different hardware set, but I don't know the specs for
it) or any other computer I've used. On my problematic Win 2k computer, my
drivers are all updated and I've been using DirectX 9.0c, and I'm pretty sure
it isn't the cd drive's fault, since I'd recently tried adding a dvd rom
drive, but had the same results, with Windows not wanting to play sounds and
use either disc drive at the same time.
Any help on this frustrating issue would be greatly appreciated. I've run
out of ideas, myself.
