I don't know if you missed my earlier answer, but here it is again:

This is not a general problem with NT Backup in Win2000, as it usually
works. There isn't anything in MSKB about this issue, either.

It might be a hardware/firmware problem, have you checked with your
hardware vendor?

I suppose that you are backing up compressible files. If they already are
compressed, hardware compression will not be able to compress them further.
Normally, you get a compression factor 1.2 to 1.4, meaning 24 to 28 GB on a
tape. 40GB is only sales talk. This wouldn't disable the compression state
in NT Backup, though.
