It all started with me being an idiot. I had a look at eMule which is a p2p
program for sharing. As my firewall was obstructing the access, I brought it
down and trusted that my router would look out for me.
When finished, I needed to make a new folder in explorer and found to my horror
that instead of obeying that, it tried to install drive image 7.0 or something
similar. I tried nearly everything to bring my computer to its senses
- all to no avail. Well I had C: backed up so no worries - I formatted C: drive
and installed 2000 pro, no trouble. Then came the restore which was on Drive F:
this is where the trouble started: F: had become a CD reader/writer instead of
the first half of the second drive which is also a 200GB drive. So I had a look
at the Admin Tools where I picked out the Disk Manager or whatever it is called.
The disk did show up with a nasty red spot adorned with a white cross and it
said that the disk was dynamic and unreadable.
Used Westen Digital, the manufacturers floppie and rebooted to that. It informed
me that both drive 0 and drive 1 were OK - in other words it should have worked.
Now my backups are on F and G drives and so are lot of video and photos - I
would be very pleased to recover the data - but how PLEASE.
For your information, my stats are:
Win 2000, Pentium 4 2.4 Ghz
1 Gb memory,ADSL
200+200 GB disks partitioned C:D:E;as 7.81, 80.84. 97.65
F: G: as 88.65, 97.66 for data
